Le Pen Quits National Front
April 24th, 2017 | Poletical News
Ahead of the second round of French voting, National Front leader and qualifying presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen, stepped down as the leader of her party. In an announcement Monday, Le Pen said, "Tonight I am no longer the president of the National Front. I am the presidential candidate."
Le Pen has been the head of the party since 2011 and since purged the party of more contentious characters, including her own father. Her resignation as party leader could be a move to distance herself from the party's prior policies and allegations of anti-semitism. The move is thought to be an attempt to make Le Penn more appealing to moderate French voters and to challenge her opponent, Emmanuel Macron, on May 7.
