Should Fox News Fire Shepard Smith?

Fox News has been known to separate its programming into “opinion” and “news”, but some parts of its news wing have fallen prey to the beasts of fake news. One in particular is Fox News' Shepard Smith Reporting, which has been dominated by the unsubstantiated claims surrounding Russia's meddling in the US election and the non-existent Trump-Russia connections. Almost daily, Shepard Smith wades into rants and allegations about Trump's connections to Russia while ignoring the larger, real and substantiated connections between Russia and the Clintons. For this, petitions and calls to have Smith fired have been growing.

Shepard Smith is also a managing editor at Fox News, in charge of breaking news. This has started the alarm bells among the Fox News audience, causing explosions on Twitter that call for Smith's immediate resignation. A petition at Change.org is nearing 3,000 and will likely surpass that by the time this is published.

The petition states:

Shepard Smith has repeatedly expressed commentaries that are contrary to the published standards of Fox News.  Specifically, the representation that Fox News is fair and balanced.  Fox News needs to retract that banner as long as Shepard Smith is employed by and represents Fox News as their premier journalist.

Today, Shepherd Smith berated Gov. Bobby Jindal, for using the term All Lives Matter, he did this several times. He stated 'why do you keep using that term, it's offensive to people.'

Meanwhile, Shepard Smith's commentaries are far more offensive to many regular viewers of Fox News. Fire Shepard Smith! He is a phony and a detriment to the concept of fairness and balance on any level.”

The petition was started eight months ago, but has only begun to gain steam over the past three weeks as Smith's program has covered the false facts around Trump's non-existent Russia ties in the same manner as CNN and MSNBC.

For over a week, Smith has followed the chorus of CNN by endlessly and shamelessly covering the sources of information regarding the possible illegal surveillance of Trump, rather than the possible illegal surveillance of Trump. Like CNN, Smith seems more concerned with who in the White House leaked or provided the information to Devin Nunes, rather than what the information could mean if it proves to be true.

The real story that the mainstream news media in America is trying to subvert is that the Obama Administration and DoJ may have illegally—or unethically—spied on the Trump campaign. There have been suggestions that Obama's DoJ may have exploited a loophole in foreign surveillance procedures to collect conversations and communications from the Trump campaign. If any of this proves to be true, it could have negative consequences for Democrats. If any of it proves to be illegal rather than simply unethical, the consequences could be worse. Rather than focusing on the implications of unethical or illegal surveillance, Shepard Smith has joined CNN and the left-wing blogosphere in trying to force the resignation (from the Intel Committee) of Devin Nunes and to implicate the Trump Administration in a conspiracy.

Fox News has built a loyal audience by defying the common narratives in the Democrat controlled news media, but with Shepard Smith's reporting, it risks losing it all. By committing to hours worth of fake news with Shepard Smith, Fox News may be violating its own standards—as stated in the petition above.
