The NDP's Prejudice
Last month Poletical asked its readers about conservatism and homosexuality. Our earlier poll found that 39% of Canadians still believe that being gay and conservative is a contradiction. Poletical decided to dig deeper and find out where this perception is more prevalent and what kind of voters were under this impression. The results were somewhat disturbing and the polarity based on party lines was unexpected.
Here are the results of our poll and some visitor comments that accompanied some responses.
73% of respondents who identified as NDP supporters said that being gay and conservative is a contradiction because "conservatives lack intelligence". 7% said they didn't think that being gay and conservative is a contradiction. 10% said being gay and conservative is a contradiction because "conservatives think homosexuality is a sin". Another 10% said that they themselves think "homosexuality is wrong".
What's most stunning about this result is that 10% of NDP supporters claimed to believe that homosexuality is wrong. More disturbing still is the fact that a vast majority of NDP supporters actually believe conservatives are unintelligent.
Breakdown of NDP supporters:
7% - "Being gay and conservative is not a contradiction"
10% - "Conservatives think homosexuality is a sin"
10% - "Homosexuality is wrong"
73% - "Conservatives lack intelligence"
NDP visitor comments:
"It's not a contradiction per se. It's more about being a hypocrite. One might argue that the values and ideas that a conservative party holds are similar to the same values and ideas that kept homosexuals oppressed throughout history. For this reason, if a homosexual values his rights (which are relatively new in Canada), then it would be hypocritical to support a party that continues to hold the same oppressive values that could be seen as oppressing other minority groups." - Halifax
73% of respondents who identified as Liberal Party supporters said that being gay and conservative is not a contradiction. 9% said that "conservatives don't understand homosexuality". 7% said "conservatives lack intelligence". 5% said "conservatives think homosexuality is a sin". 5% said "conservatives are paranoid and hate everyone who is different than them".
Breakdown of Liberal supporters:
5% - "Conservatives are paranoid and hate everyone who is different"
5% - "Conservatives think homosexuality is a sin"
7% - "Conservatives lack intelligence"
9% - "Conservatives don't understand homosexuality"
74% - "Being gay and conservative is not a contradiction"
Liberal visitor comments:
"Conservatives generally dislike change. Accepting homosexuality is new to many of them thus they reject it. As the acceptance of homosexuality becomes more commonplace more conservatives will accept it. They generally just stick to the status quo, no matter what that is. That is the core value of all brands of conservatism. Religion is a big part of this for many of them as well but not all." - unknown
"To clarify: I don't think being gay and -fiscally- conservative is a contradiction. But to be gay at -socially- conservative...there's something wrong with that picture." - Ottawa
88% - "Being gay and conservative is not a contradiction"
9% - "Homosexuality is wrong"
3% - "Conservatives think homosexuality is a sin"
Conservative visitor comments:
"There are many different kinds of conservatives. To paint us all with the same brush is unfair." - Ottawa
"I have for years considered myself to be conservative politically and while I am in no way locked into the conservative party, I did vote for them before. Besides those views, I believe in tolerance and think that anyone who opposes homosexual rights and freedoms is as ignorant and bigoted as those who wanted to "Kill the Indian and save the man." This is the 21st century and Canada is an open and tolerant nation." - Red Deer
"I am a God fearing Christian who is also a conservative....the Holy Bible says homosexuals are an abomination to the Lord........if you got a problem with it, take it up with Him, it not me passing any sort of judgement on my fellow man/woman, in fact the few people I do know who are gay who are good people I would be proud to call a friend, but their life style is wrong according to my faith I believe in." - Vernon
Although this poll represents Poletical visitors, people from all across Canada voted, from BC to New Brunswick. The link to the original page was shared on Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. Only Canadian IP addresses were counted. The results should not be considered scientific, but they should be considered relevant.
This poll has found more bigotry among NDP ranks than was expected and far less bigotry among the ranks of Liberal and Conservative Party supporters. Perhaps a more thorough investigation will be done on this issue in the future by a major research firm. Until then, these results speak volumes about Canada's political environment and the perceptions about our prospering gay community.
